Mission Statement:
The Taija Belwood foundation is being established simply “for a safer Cornelius Pass Road”. In the spirit of cooperation and kindness we intend to heighten public awareness through activism to influence the elected officials and their public works departments to incrementally make safety improvements on this road.
Facts:
This road is used by an estimated 10-11 thousand of our family and friends daily to commute between Washington, Multnomah and Columbia Counties. At the time of its official designation as a “Rural Arterial” in 1990, only half that number of commuters used this “short-cut”. Haz-Mat trucking is routed along this road to avoid the vista ridge tunnel. The 4 miles from Skyline to Hwy 30 is in the county of Multnomah and is the worst section in terms of turns, line of sight, terrain and lack of safety barricades. The Bethany area is currently developing an estimated 15 thousand homes many of which will commute to Portland via this route. MCSO Lt. Gates along with Multnomah County public works departments is in agreement that this is a fatal road.
